The road to independence began in the 16th century
When explorers from Spain and Portugal began trading
Leading to the development of ports, such as Lagos.
The British dominant influence on the region in the late 19th century,
To hampered German explorers the aim of expanding
In the trade oriented places such as Lagos.
In 1900, Southern Nigeria Protectorate replaced the Royal Niger Company
And 1914 saw the Southern and the Northern Nigeria Protectorate merging,
And forming the borders of modern day Nigeria.
Then the British Rule began to wane by the middle of 20th century,
As the call for independence was loudly ringing
Then the British Empire granted independence to Nigeria
On 1 October 1960 under a constitution with a parliamentary
Government and a degree of autonomy for the country's three regions
And today marks the 58th independence celebration of Nigeria.
